Space and Time. Stories from the Neuchâtel Observatory
HKB MA Design Entrepreneurship – Exhibition Project
Teacher: Matylda Krzykowski
During this course we discussed how to structure our project to present it to the public. This document also makes it possible to contact potential partners or sponsors.
Teachers: Ferdinand Vogler, Josh Levent
During this course we learned how to present our project in different formats. In 5 and 1 minutes, and in 30 seconds. This is a very interesting way to summarise our ideas and to be able to present them clearly to an audience that knows nothing about them.
Pitch in 1 minute
The permanent exhibition Space and Time: Stories from the Neuchâtel Observatory wants to offer the public a dive into the origins of time measurement in the Neuchâtel area over the last 150 years.
In an Art Nouveau style building, visitors will be able to discover how the industrial era accelerated the making of time, how the observation of the movement of stars and then atoms made it possible to make ever more precise measurements, to arrive at atomic clocks with a margin of error of one second every 30 million years!
To allow the visitor to understand this complex subject, images, videos, objects and texts from other fields such as art, philosophy and science will be on display. For example: the painting of Dali’s soft watches or the first image of a black hole.
Pitch in 30 seconds
What is time? The exhibition Space and Time: Stories from the Neuchâtel Observatory will offer to the public a dive into the origins of time measurement in the Neuchâtel area.
Teacher: Hugo Ryser
During the autumn semester 2019, I took a training course in animation at the HKB. I developed an animation to present the history of the Neuchâtel Observatory. This experience allowed me to understand the technique and to think about presentation solutions for the public. The idea is to be able to explain different aspects of the Observatory’s history in a didactic way.

What is design entrepreneurship
“Design entrepreneurship evades these economic rituals because the designers don’t wait for a client to bring them a design problem; instead, the designers define the problem themselves and develop its solution in a business venture. And their solution can often be as creative as its team, price and distribution.”
Robert Lzicar, Head of MA Design, HKB, Bern
Homework “Fake Prototype”
Task: Choose an existing organization or project as an example. Choose a piece of content about that organization and model your project onto it.
For my project, I use the layout of the Science Museum of London’s website
PDF file of the fake prototype and the presentation
Homework “Company Profile”
Task: Create a written profile on one of the organizations listed below. Additionally prepare a few images and large text slides for your group’s in-class presentation. Use your way of thinking and approaching subjects as a designer to learn more about the company. But don’t forget points of view outside of what traditionally is thought of as design: cultural, financial, at a societal level, engineering-wise, in regards to its financing, etc.

We also learned how to fill in our Business Model Canvas
Teacher: Dan Nessler
During 3 days we had a course on design processes with the famous double diamond pattern. It was an experience rich in beautiful exchanges. An interesting exercise was to present another colleague’s project. I presented Kristina’s project on Bulgarian heritage. This approach has enriched my vision of my own exhibition project.

Public evening lecture in the HKB
I really like the very simple approach of this designer. With few means, he creates very beautiful and practical objects.
Teacher: Lionel Ruffel
For 4 days we occupied the Literary Institute of Biel for a workshop on narrative with the French writer Lionel Ruffel. The concept was to create a collaborative exhibition between all the students on what narration is. It was a rich and stimulating experience.
Movie of the team for our project of exhibition
My project was based on the Aby Warburg Atlas.
The history/story of mankind is linked to time and its measure.
Teacher: Annina Schneller
During this course we discovered how ethics should be part of design and life in general. Our decisions must be thought out so that the impact of what we produce has the least negative impact on people.

Exercice Who / What / Why for my project
Share fundamental questions of the humanity with the public with scenography and storytelling through a beautiful exhibition ! (around the topic of time)

Exhibit fundamental questions
In the left, the Golden Circle give a new vision of the project, it’s creativ, that’s open.
The word “Agora” (Greek history, meeting point in the village) give quick informations about the topic. We have images and emotions with the last sentence “Our roots are the future” (Rallying cry).
The teachers gave us their feedback on our project by choosing a TV advertising. For me, they chose Montblanc’s advertisement “The beauty of a second” made by Wim Wenders!
Teacher: Theresia Leuenberger
The workshop deals with the questions of power in relation to design processes (collaboration with multiple actors) and the working of design (perception, use).
We worked in groups to talk about some of our projects and try to understand these design issues.
